Creeping juniper

Creeping juniper

Question: creeping juniper

Good morning. I have a very large garden. I read somewhere about someone who recommended the use of the "creeping juniper" to replace the classic lawn, considering it more resistant, walkable and in need of less care. I would like to know if this is true if I have to decide on the merits. One last thing. This plant, which can now be used, also destroys weeds. Thank you.

Creeping juniper -">Answer: creeping juniper

Dear John,

juniperus horizontalis is a very vigorous and resistant ground cover plant; however, with the passing of the years, as well as widening a lot, it also tends to get slightly wider, forming bushes that can become up to 50-80 cm high. Surely it is a shrub that can effectively cover the areas at the foot of the hedge, or other shrubs, or the bare flower beds, in order to make them decorative, without requiring great care, or even frequent interventions to remove weeds, because the dense and evergreen canopy of the juniper prevents the seeds from germinating below it, and often also prevents development through stolons, producing a dense dry shade. Furthermore, I believe that juniper, even if of dwarf and compact varieties, cannot be trampled on freely; in the sense: if you carpet a flower bed, and one day you have to go over it to prune the hedge behind it, no problem; but if your kids want to play football on it with their friends, well, that's definitely unlikely. Also because juniper, like many conifers, has the defect of not sprouting from old wood, and therefore if you break the branches in the upper part of the plant, with great probability you will over time find yourself with stumps, or holes, in the crown of the plant. .
