Breeds of dogs: Mallorquin Sheepdog - Perro de Pastor Mallorquin

Origin, classification and history

Origin: Spain.
F.C.I classification: Group 1 - shepherd dogs and cattle dogs (excluding Swiss cattle dogs).

Many enthusiasts and scholars of the Maiorchino Shepherd Dog (Ca de bestiar - Pastor mallorquìn) believe that the breed was formed through various pairs between Castilian and local dogs. Currently the breed has a typical black coat, but it has not always been so; some time ago there were cases of tiger specimens, white with tiger spots and black with a showy white collar, currently colors not allowed by the breed Standard. The breed in the Balearic islands was divided into two varieties: the first long-haired and the second short-haired. Unfortunately, the unstoppable tourism development of the Balearics has created many problems for the selection of the breed, due to the various random mating with different types of dogs imported into the islands by visitors. The long-haired variety has now almost completely disappeared; in fact, if today we see specimens of this breed in dog shows, they are undoubtedly subject to short hair. It is the least represented among the native breeds of Spain. It is a breed that has been imported outside the Balearics very recently, in fact, until a few years ago it was practically unknown outside the Islands. On its islands it is a highly appreciated breed. The breed has been recognized by the F.C.I. in the year 1980. it is considered one of the rarest breeds in the world.

General aspect

The somatic characteristics of the Maiorchino Shepherd are very important from a cinotechnical point of view. It is a dog with a sub-convex profile, large, but not excessive, of medium weight. Completely black or black with a white spot on the chest. Very well proportioned dog, rustic, resistant, muscular, robust and agile. It can have long or short hair. Since the latter is more frequent, the long-haired variety is now a subrace of the former. Subipermetric, mesomorphic, sub-convex type. The structure is that of a mesomorph. In females, a longitudinal diameter greater than 3% of the height at the withers is accepted.

Shepherd dog, guard and defense, of great nobility. It is a breed that still does its old job well today. It is a breed highly appreciated since ancient times by farmers and shepherds for its great character qualities, endurance and rusticity. It can be considered, like several other breeds, with a triple attitude. If today it is a recognized breed it owes it only to its talents, which have made it a good human helper. Very fond of people she considers friends. A little suspicious and suspicious of strangers, from whom he always tries to stay away, they watch over their slightest movement. Breed quite independent and used to living in the open air always.
